Chief Operating Officer – North Asia

About the role

The Chief Operating Officer – North Asia reports to the Global COO of Institutional Banking and leads Institutional Operations across China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea and Taiwan. The role balances customer, regulatory and country requirements with enterprise‑wide simplification and operational excellence.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and develop Country COO teams, ensuring delivery of customer, risk, regulatory and governance outcomes.
• Provide regional oversight of Institutional Operations, monitoring emerging risks, issues and opportunities.
• Own the financial plan and performance, managing operating expenditure, workforce costs and transformation benefits.
• Maintain awareness of regulatory developments and support Country COOs in regulatory engagements.
• Represent customer and country interests in operational and strategic decisions, championing outcomes that balance compliance and efficiency.

Required profile

• Deep Institutional Banking expertise, including products, licensing and multi‑jurisdiction regulatory requirements for North Asia.
• Proven leadership across North Asian markets with strong judgement and influence through indirect authority.
• Exceptional stakeholder management and communication skills, engaging CEOs, regulators and senior executives.
• Strong operational risk, AML, financial crime, compliance and governance experience.
• Track record of building and developing geographically dispersed teams and fostering inclusion and continuous improvement.
