Research Assistant Professor – Scientific Analysis of Chinese Painting

About the role

The University of Hong Kong’s Faculty of Arts is seeking a Research Assistant Professor to lead a three‑year project on the scientific analysis of Chinese paintings, in partnership with the Hong Kong Museum of Art and the Laboratory for Conservation and Science.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct scientific research to characterise materials, structures and components of Chinese paintings.
• Apply advanced imaging technologies and analytical methods to reveal regional and historical artistic practices.
• Synthesize scientific findings to address art‑historical questions and conservation challenges.
• Publish results in leading cultural‑heritage science journals and present at international conferences.
• Maintain collaborative relationships with curators, conservators, faculty and technical staff.
• Teach one to two courses per year and deliver a workshop on Chinese‑painting analysis.
• Organise and lead field trips for students to world‑leading museums or conservation labs.

Required profile

• PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, Conservation Science or a closely related discipline.
• Demonstrated experience in scientific analysis of artworks or cultural heritage objects.
• Strong publication record in cultural‑heritage science or technical art history.
• Ability to teach university‑level courses and supervise students.

Required skills

• Advanced imaging technologies (e.g., hyperspectral imaging, X‑ray fluorescence).
• Material characterisation techniques (e.g., spectroscopy, microscopy).
