Legal Counsel – East Asia

About the role

We are seeking a proactive Legal Counsel to support our East Asia offices. The role involves providing comprehensive legal assistance across maritime, corporate, and commercial matters while ensuring compliance with internal policies and external regulations.

Key responsibilities

• Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of contracts, including maritime, corporate, and commercial agreements.
• Advise internal stakeholders on day‑to‑day legal issues and strategic initiatives.
• Lead legal and compliance risk analyses, coordinating due diligence with internal teams and external counsel.
• Manage compliance workstreams such as policy development, in‑house training planning, third‑party due diligence, and screening processes.
• Conduct internal compliance reviews, investigations, and legal research to identify and mitigate potential risks.
• Own moderately complex matters with limited supervision and escalate high‑risk issues as needed.
• Perform ad‑hoc legal assignments and projects.

Required profile

• LL.B or J.D. from a recognized institution and qualified to practice law in Hong Kong.
• 5–8 years post‑qualification experience in private practice or an in‑house legal team, with expertise in maritime, corporate, or compliance law.
• Proven track record of independently drafting, advising on, and negotiating contracts and leading compliance matters.
• Strong ability to manage competing priorities and work both independently and collaboratively across regions.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, stakeholder management, and organizational skills.
• Sound commercial judgment, proactive mindset, and high ownership of work product.
• Experience in the shipping/maritime industry or compliance work is highly preferred.
