Principal Engineer – 5G/6G Protocol & Application Software

About the role

The Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) is seeking senior engineers to lead R&D on 5G/6G radio access network software and intelligent applications. The role focuses on designing, implementing and commercialising high‑performance protocol stacks and mobile intelligent systems.

Key responsibilities

• Design and develop MAC, RRM and SON algorithms for 5G/6G systems.
• Perform system‑level simulation, theoretical analysis and standard‑compliance verification.
• Develop control and data planes of the protocol stack for 5G/6G base stations.
• Integrate end‑to‑end systems, conduct interoperability, performance testing and tuning on base‑station hardware.
• Collaborate with hardware, software and system engineers and support customers during commercialisation.
• Manage R&D project planning, milestones, technical reporting and stakeholder interactions.

Required profile

• Ph.D. or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, Telecommunications or related field.
• Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in telecom software development.
• Proficiency in written and spoken English; Cantonese or Putonghua a plus.
• Willingness to work onsite in Hong Kong; overseas candidates may be sponsored for an employment visa.

Required skills

• Programming in C, C++, Python and Shell scripting.
• Linux development environment.
• Strong knowledge of 4G/5G standards, system architecture (SA) and related procedures.
• Experience with signal processing, image processing, information theory, numerical analysis and stochastic processes.
• Project management experience is a plus.
