Lead Mechanical Engineer – Hyperscale Data Centres (Hong Kong)

About the role

Our client, a leading international data‑centre developer and operator, is seeking a Mechanical Design Lead to drive the mechanical design strategy for a hyperscale data‑centre in Hong Kong. The role will cover the full design lifecycle from concept through commissioning and may expand to other APAC projects after successful delivery.

Key responsibilities

• Lead technical design, review and optimisation of critical mechanical infrastructure including HVAC, chilled water, thermal management, fire protection, pumping and drainage systems.
• Develop concept designs, cooling load calculations, capacity planning studies and space allocation analyses, supporting PUE and WUE benchmarking.
• Manage external engineering consultants across feasibility, schematic, detailed design and construction phases, ensuring design quality and compliance.
• Conduct design review workshops, evaluate equipment selections, and support procurement through technical specifications and tender evaluations.
• Ensure compliance with ASHRAE, Uptime Institute, TIA‑942, NFPA and local building codes, and promote sustainability and energy‑efficiency goals.
• Oversee testing, factory and site acceptance, integrated system testing and commissioning activities, and assist in troubleshooting during execution.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering or a related discipline.
• Minimum 2 years of mechanical engineering design experience in data‑centres or other high‑availability facilities, covering concept to commissioning.
• Proven experience managing external consultants and coordinating with senior stakeholders.
• Understanding of data‑centre resiliency, reliability requirements and relevant industry standards.

Required skills

• HVAC and chilled water system design.
• Thermal management and fire protection engineering.
• Pumping and drainage system expertise.
• Knowledge of ASHRAE Thermal Guidelines, Uptime Institute Tier III/IV principles, TIA‑942 and NFPA standards.
• Proficiency with mechanical calculation software, thermal modelling tools and AutoCAD.
• Strong command of Microsoft Office applications.
