Director of Development and External Relations

About the role

The Director of Development and External Relations will lead MSF Hong Kong’s effort to mobilise public, media, institutions and communities in support of the organisation’s humanitarian medical mission. The role safeguards MSF’s reputation, integrates fundraising, communications, outreach and digital activities, and drives sustained income‑generation across Hong Kong and Singapore markets.

Key responsibilities

• Define and approve MSF Hong Kong’s overarching narrative and positioning, ensuring alignment with the global MSF Identity and Positioning Framework.
• Coordinate communications, fundraising and digital teams to move audiences through the supporter funnel from awareness to retention.
• Govern brand standards, executive tone and reputational risk, acting as final approver for high‑risk positioning.
• Set public affairs positioning, media escalation rules and act as spokesperson when required.
• Establish and monitor KPIs that link communications effectiveness to mobilisation and fundraising outcomes.
• Lead crisis communications governance for Hong Kong, ensuring rapid decision‑making and execution.
• Review, challenge and approve the fundraising strategy, endorse income targets, investment assumptions and KPIs.
• Provide strategic direction to department heads, arbitrate trade‑offs and hold leaders accountable for delivery.

Required profile

• Proven senior leadership experience in development, fundraising, communications or external relations within a non‑profit or humanitarian context.
• Demonstrated ability to manage complex stakeholder ecosystems and integrate multiple engagement functions.
• Strong reputation management and crisis communications experience, preferably in a high‑visibility environment.
• Excellent strategic thinking, decision‑making and accountability orientation.
