Director of Development and External Relations

About the role

The Director of Development and External Relations will lead MSF Hong Kong’s efforts to mobilise public, media, institutional and community support for the organisation’s humanitarian medical mission. Reporting to the Executive Director, the role ensures a unified engagement ecosystem across fundraising, communications, outreach and digital channels.

Key responsibilities

• Define and approve MSF Hong Kong’s overarching narrative, ensuring alignment with the global MSF identity.
• Integrate communications, fundraising and digital strategies to move audiences through the supporter funnel.
• Set and monitor KPIs that link communication effectiveness to fundraising outcomes.
• Lead crisis communications and reputation management for Hong Kong, establishing clear decision‑making processes.
• Review, challenge and endorse the fundraising strategy, income targets and investment assumptions.
• Oversee department heads, approve strategies, arbitrate trade‑offs and hold leaders accountable for delivery.

Required profile

• Proven senior leadership experience in development, fundraising or communications within a non‑profit or humanitarian context.
• Strong understanding of integrated engagement ecosystems and data‑driven performance management.
• Excellent public speaking and media relations skills, with the ability to act as a spokesperson.
• Strategic thinker capable of aligning multiple functions toward common mobilisation goals.

Required skills

• Experience in designing and governing multi‑channel fundraising campaigns.
• Ability to develop and enforce brand standards and narrative consistency.
• Expertise in crisis communications governance and reputation stewardship.
