Director of Facilities

About the role

The Director of Facilities will lead the daily operations and maintenance of the school district’s buildings, grounds, and equipment. Reporting to the Assistant Superintendent of Business, this senior position ensures safe, efficient, and compliant facilities for students and staff.

Key responsibilities

• Plan, review, and monitor all district operational and maintenance projects in coordination with the Superintendent.
• Maintain budget control for operational, maintenance, and capital projects and prepare preliminary plant budgets.
• Supervise custodial staff (day and night) and manage work schedules, preventive maintenance, and repairs.
• Oversee grounds care, playing fields, and athletic facilities preparation.
• Monitor outside contractors, ensure contract compliance, and conduct vehicle and building inspections.
• Ensure compliance with environmental, health, and safety regulations (OSHA, Right‑to‑Know, AHERA, IPM, lead testing) and maintain required documentation.
• Recruit, recommend hires, and provide leadership to the facilities team.

Required profile

• Current Certified Educational Facilities Manager (CEFM) certification.
• High school diploma (or equivalent).
• Minimum 7 years of experience in school plant maintenance or large‑facility maintenance.
• At least 10 years of direct supervision of maintenance personnel.
• Valid trade license (plumbing, electrical, HVAC, etc.) or willingness to obtain one within one year.
• U.S. citizenship or legal residency and ability to meet New Jersey residency requirements.
